As affiliates to the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association the club’s annual regatta forms part of their competitive season. The event marked by a thrilling junior status Fours level race with Newport clinching their first ever Fours Championships after a two length, history making, win over Southampton.
With both teams progressing to the final, Newport went hard from the start, taking half a length out of Southampton in the first 100 metres. By halfway they had a length’s lead, and a further push saw them pull away further. Southampton then pushed hard for the finish to close the gap giving everything they had to catch Newport. But Newport retained their composure and rhythm to make an historic win. Newport’s first ever Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association Championship win in the four man category. They now go to Plymouth in an attempt to win the South Coast Championships. The first time a Newport crew have reached this level of competition.
